Race one of the FIM Supersport World Championship in Aragon didn’t quite go to plan for PTR Triumph’s Tom Booth-Amos today when he crashed out of the 15-lap race as he battled to stay with the leading group.
Booth-Amos got a good launch from the fourth row of the grid and had comfortably moved up to ninth but unfortunately he overcooked it on lap six and crashed out unhurt at turn eight. The British rider will take the opportunity to redeem himself in tomorrow’s race two which he starts from P11 on the grid.
Tom Booth-Amos: “Unfortunately I just tucked the front trying to push a little bit over the top to stay with the leaders, trying to catch and get back to the leaders. Overall I think the pace we have we probably would have finished fifth which would have been good but unfortunately I crashed so we will be realistic tomorrow and try again.”
Teammate Ondrej Vostatek got a good start off the line but for the majority of the race he was being held up by slower riders that he was struggling to get by. By lap eleven the Czech rider was exchanging places with Luke Power, a battle he eventually came out on top of in P19 at the line.
Ondrej Vostatek: “The start was ok but I was pushed wide by another rider and this cost me a couple of positions. In the end I was able to get in front of a group and I was able to make a gap and get closer to another group fighting for the points. I was able to overtake McPhee but this was the last lap so I ended up nineteenth. Tomorrow, if the start is similar to today and I defend more from the start, I can keep myself in the group fighting for the points.”
PTR Triumph Team Manager Simon Buckmaster: “Obviously disappointed that Tom crashed out. The start was ok from the fourth row and then looking at it, our pace was probably fifth or sixth. Tom pushed to go with Manzi and was just a little bit hot into turn 8 and slid off. We’ve discussed it and I am sure we will be back challenging for a top six place tomorrow in race two. Ondrej’s start was ok, he lost places on the opening lap and then he sat behind riders too long and in the end you ride to their bike’s strengths and not yours. He was rushing into turn 14, the right before the left onto the back straight and took many laps to get past Luke Power who was significantly slower than him. Shame because then immediately his pace was much quicker and, although he only finished 19th he was 1.3 seconds off the points, all because he didn’t overtake people he was much faster than. He needs to look into that tomorrow, the bike is working well, he should be back in the points, ok not Cremona level but he should have scored points, he didn’t and only he can put that right tomorrow.”
Making it a weekend of highs and lows for PTR Triumph at the tenth round of the 2024 FIM Supersport World Championship at Motorland Aragon, Tom Booth-Amos fought back into contention, making up for his DNF yesterday with a stunning sixth position in today’s race two.
Consistency was key for PTR Triumph’s Tom Booth-Amos as he put in a strong, intelligent performance in the second 15-lap race of the weekend to finish only 4.07 seconds off the win.
Tom Booth-Amos: “Overall really happy with the result. It hasn’t really been the strongest circuit for the bike but we worked really hard. Unfortunately I went down yesterday and we just thought, do my best today and see what I can do and I’m actually really happy to be only four seconds off the win so credit to the boys, they have worked really hard to get me comfortable so thank you.”
Teammate Ondrej Vostatek enjoyed a stronger race two, just losing out on the points on the last couple of laps to take P17 at the line.
Ondrej Vostatek: “The start was much better than yesterday, I was much stronger everywhere, fighting with Bayliss, Edwards, Odendaal and Tuuli. I was behind Bayliss, Odendaal overtook me into the first corner, he pushed me wide so Tuuli used this chance to get in front of me. Then I fought with them but in the end it is seventeenth place. I’m not happy because I was close to the points today.”
PTR Triumph Team Manager Simon Buckmaster: “Huge improvement on yesterday. P6 but such a strong P6. We made another step as we have almost halved the gap to the win from seven seconds to four, so a great job by Tom and all the boys in the team on both sides of the garage. Also a much improved ride by Ondrej, he just missed out on the points, he got passed by Tuuli and Odendaal at the end. So 17th and a faster race time for him so we take the positives from that.”
