This weekend the eleventh and penultimate round of the 2023 FIM Supersport World Championship will be held at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal. The Portuguese circuit is rightly called the ‘Rollercoaster’ for its many elevation changes and blind corners.
After ten completed rounds and two more rounds to go, Ten Kate Racing is still in contention for the world title in the World Supersport championship. Stefano Manzi is second in the standings with 323 points in total, 85 points off the world championship leader. After his strong performance in Race 2 at Motorland Aragon, the Italian will again give everything this weekend to achieve more successes in this category.
Jorge Navarro also rode a good second race at the Spanish circuit and equalled his best result in the World Supersport championship with sixth place. At the 4.592-kilometre Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, the Spaniard already has a fair amount of experience and will aim to improve on his best placement in the World Supersport class.
Stefano Manzi: “The race weekend at Motorland Aragón was good and not that good at the same time. I have nice memories from Portimão because last year I took my first victory in World Supersport there. It will be very challenging again this year but we will try our best to be at the top.”
Jorge Navarro: “I am excited to ride again in Portimão after last weekend’s race at Motorland Aragón. We left that circuit with a positive feeling and I would like to start this weekend in the same way. We will work hard to achieve our goals.”
Kervin Bos – Ten Kate Racing team manager: “We are already entering the penultimate race weekend of this season at a circuit we now know quite well. We know that it will now be very difficult to become world champion but as long as there is still a chance, we will always do our very best. We came back strongly in Aragon in the second race and will try to be as strong right from Race 1 this weekend. In addition, IDM Supersport champion Twan Smits will make his debut in the World Supersport championship with the Yamaha Thailand Racing Team this weekend. We at Ten Kate are very proud of this talent development.”
The race weekend at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve starts on Friday with two free practice sessions, followed by the Superpole session on Saturday morning at 10:25 am local time (11:25 am Central European summer time). Race 1 starts Saturday afternoon at 15:15 (16:15 CEST) with the start of Race 2 on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 (13:30 CEST).
